Duck! in neon by Sarah Blood at Tent London

These neon flying ducks by designer maker Sarah Blood were a stand out favourite at Tent London on the Designed and Made stand. Eleven designer/makers from the North East took part in the feature including Michael Armstrong, Jonathan Aspinall, Sarah Blood, Amy Levinson, Becky McKenzie, Bettina Nissen, Michael Siney, Ellen Thomas, Kate Usher, Polly Westergaard and RASKL.

Sarah Blood is a mixed media artist whose work questions the definition of strength and permanence. She uses the density of materials such as concrete and clay and contrasts and combines them with the perceived fragility of glass, inert gas, and light. Her forms are inspired by science, geometric abstraction, and post-minimalist sensibilities, but her work evokes personal and human qualities. Since earning her MA in Glass in 2003 from the University of Sunderland, Sarah has exhibited throughout the UK, Europe and the USA, as well as Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates.

In a departure from Sarah’s usual working practice, The CariBoo, Birdhouse and Duck! series are a light-hearted satirical take on traditional hunting trophies. In her own words:

“Artists rarely make work things for themselves. Born from a desire to have some cool neon in my home, this work was developed because I Want It!”
